Key Takeaways:

  1. Access to digital devices is foundational for digital inclusion and participation.
  2. One-to-one device onboarding and ongoing classes to help build confidence show a transformational impact on accessibility.
  3. Strategic partnerships support the effective distribution and education on device use.

In today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, the digital divide has emerged as a significant barrier to participation in society, especially for older adults. Recognizing this critical issue, GetSetUp has launched innovative device onboarding initiatives aimed at ensuring that older adults have the necessary skills and confidence to engage with the digital world. We strive to enhance inclusivity and connectivity, thereby fostering a more digitally equitable society.

GetSetUp services align directly with the device deployment programs highlighted in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's (NTIA)’s Digital Equity Capacity Grant Program, a $1.44 billion investment in digital inclusion. GetSetUp classes help older adults learn and gain confidence on the digital tools promoted in the NTIA’s efforts to bridge the digital divide through internet for all and efforts to promote broadband from all.

The Foundation of Digital Equity

Access to digital devices is not just about staying current; it's about ensuring equitable participation in the digital age. Whether it's connecting with loved ones, accessing health services, or continuing education, digital devices play a crucial role in everyday life. However, for many older adults, these essential tools remain out of reach due to financial constraints or a lack of awareness about how to use them effectively. While funding often offers devices, these sources often lack the skills and team to train the recipients on how to utilize their new devices. GetSetUp steps in to help address this gap and bridge the digital divide.

Empowering Through Device Deployment

GetSetUp's device onboarding programs are specifically designed to address the challenges organizations face with ensuring device recipients understand how to utilize their device and gain confidence to integrate it into their daily lives. In collaboration with tech companies, governments, and community organizations, we have been able to onboard device recipients of tablets and Chromebooks who would otherwise have no access to these digital lifelines. GetSetUp’s onboarding helps partners take their work beyond providing devices alone to include comprehensive training on how to use these tools effectively, ensuring that recipients can navigate the digital landscape with confidence.

GetSetUp helped Orange County onboard 2,200 device recipients. According to Ericka Danczak, Director of Aging and Veterans Services at Orange County Community Services,

“Orange County’s senior technology program was truly a collaborative effort made possible by support from the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Council, the Board of Supervisors, our Office on Aging and OC Information Technology teams, and, our partners at GetSetUp. Not only were we able to offer older adults a robust online learning platform of virtual classes, but GetSetUp also provided individual onboarding and training for seniors who were issued an iPad. Regular communication and check-in meetings to monitor progress toward project goals kept the senior technology program on track and more older adults connected and engaged.”
“I really enjoyed the setup and the information I learned this morning. I really appreciate the service and her compassion ❤️Thank you so much,” said Paula who got onboarding help from GetSetUp Tech Support Specialist Michelle.

Similarly, when Ann got support from GetSetUp Tech Support Specialist Michelle, she said,

“Michelle was very helpful and easy to work with. She was patient and supportive and made me feel comfortable despite my lack of technology education. I felt encouraged and not as timid after the session.”

These collaborations not only help us enhance digital literacy but also ensure that the devices distributed are accompanied by relevant, easy-to-understand educational resources. By working together, we can amplify our impact, bringing digital connectivity to even more older adults across the country.

Beyond device distribution, GetSetUp offers a wealth of educational resources designed to help older adults maximize their use of digital tools. From basic tutorials on smartphone and tablet use to more advanced classes about online security and digital communication, our classes are tailored to empower users at any skill level.
