For most of her career, Evelyn Chong helped people feel heard. A communications professional with experience across the public, healthcare, and education sectors, she has led student relations and alumni engagement at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, creating positive experiences at every touchpoint. Now, as she transitions into retirement, she's bringing that same instinct for engagement to GetSetUp Singapore, where she teaches Sharing Your Colorful M&Ms (Moments & Memories) – The Joy of Journaling.
Evelyn's path to GetSetUp wasn't planned; it grew out of a chance meeting that she called "Serendipitous.”
“I met Ash, the Chief Marketing Officer of GetSetUp, Singapore, at a conference, and we started a conversation," she recalls. "GetSetUp’s goal to enable seniors to “share skills, pass on wisdom and stay connected” resonated with me, and I feel that I can contribute and offer my services."
For someone who has spent her career on people engagement and writing, teaching online felt like a natural next chapter.
Evelyn's class centers on journaling, but she's careful to distinguish her approach from simple nostalgia.
"People like to leave this as a legacy of memories, but I am advocating an interactive form of journaling, one that can also be used to build community," she explains. “It's less about looking backward and more about sharing precious moments, staying mentally sharp and connected in the present.”
She's even thought through where AI fits in.
"I do not use AI to write my journal; we have to continue thinking and using our brains," she says. "But AI can help us polish and make things better."
Her practical tip: take a journal entry, feed it into an AI tool, and ask it to turn it into a message for your grandchildren, aged six to twelve. You’ll be surprised how it can spark conversations and promote bonding across generations.
Journaling isn't Evelyn's only passion project. She's also involved in a drumming programme for active ageing, now running in 45 senior activity centers across Singapore, built around three pillars: physical agility, cognitive engagement through music and memory, and perhaps most importantly: socialisation.
"It's important to get people who stay alone at home to socialize as it improves overall well-being," she says, noting that the programme even works intergenerationally with children.
She hopes to eventually bring other crafts activities like crochet, jewelry-making, and origami to GetSetUp as well.
Evelyn's instinct to shake things up shows up throughout her career. Frustrated that student outreach relied on dry publications, she once created an entertainment-style "fashion magazine" to reach potential polytechnic students, a project picked up by the local media as a game changer.
"This publication was very well-received by School leaders and students as it was a fresh approach to disseminating academic content together with lifestyle information for youths," she says.
That same warmth carries into how she runs her sessions today.
"Being hospitable is being welcoming, making sure people are cared for and heard," she says.
She also stays curious by design, citing a Japanese researcher's advice on delaying dementia: write by hand, read out loud, and learn a new skill. In that spirit, she joined a line dancing class.
"I consider myself to have two left feet," she laughs, "but over time I have improved."
For Evelyn, GetSetUp offers something she values as much as teaching itself: community.
"Over time, more Guides will join, and I’ll get to meet even more like-minded people, and we can meet, support and learn from each other," she says.
Alongside teaching, she's also caring for her ageing mother, a reminder, she says, of why active ageing and community matter so much.
If you're looking to start (or reimagine) your own journaling practice, or simply want to connect with a warm, engagement-savvy community of learners aged 55+, Evelyn's class is a great place to begin.
