Pat has always been the type to try new things. She volunteers at Selfridge Military Air Museum, scanning newspaper articles, misc items, and photographs for the archives. Pat keeps a list of current craft projects and crafts she wants to try, and since discovering GetSetUp after COVID, has turned "trying something new" into a habit.

"It was back after COVID, and I came across GetSetUp, and it's still great," Pat said.

Pat is retired and lives in Michigan, where she and her retired military husband lived before his passing. Their kids are scattered, a son in Texas, a daughter an hour away, and two grandkids in the mix. GetSetUp access through Michigan's MDHHS partnership gave her something to build a routine around, without having to leave her home.

A craft habit that outgrew the house

Crafting is where Pat's GetSetUp story really lives. She joins Jennifer's class monthly, and took book folding and tried painting classes with Guide Deana.

‍"That's fun," she said, though she's quick to admit the results are piling up. "I'm running out of places to put my crafts, and my crafts are a bit rustic."

What started as solo screen time turned social. After trying quilling through one of Guide Jennifer's classes, Pat gave her husband's old woodshop a new purpose.

‍"He had a woodshop, and I turned it into a craft hangout," she said. Now friends gather there regularly, working through projects together, including a quilled octopus, a nod to the Detroit Red Wings' beloved hockey tradition of fans throwing octopuses onto the ice.

My crafting group had completed projects using CDs, toilet paper rolls, mosaics, glass globes, dried flowers, and rolled paper cones, and other things as well.

Pat's crafting history goes back further than GetSetUp, with a passion for ceramics, then stained glass, for about twenty years.

"You get tired after twenty years and need to branch out," she said. Retirement gave her the time to do exactly that, from paint pour art to melting markers onto tiles that she learned about in GetSetUp classes. That last one became a group event almost by accident:

"Four of us were gathered around watching the class, and it became a group class."

Comfortable with tech, still finding her rhythm

Pat moves between an iPhone, an iPad, and a Windows computer, though she prefers her laptop or the iPad's bigger screen for classes. Her tech comfort has paid off in unexpected ways; she once used her Chevy app to spot that one tire was reading lighter than the others before it became a bigger problem.

She doesn't follow a fixed class schedule.

"I go in the first of the month and see what's coming up," she said, scanning for craft, exercise, nutrition, and computer classes as they're posted.

Since 2023, she estimates she's taken more than 700 online classes across different platforms, including the five or six she typically fits in each month through GetSetUp alone.

Health benefits, and an appetite to keep going

Pat credits the platform with keeping her moving.

"My health and wellness hasn't deteriorated much, because I'm trying new exercises and watching different instructors, like Twyla and Pilar," she said. She's candid about why strength training matters more now:

"In your seventies, you don't realize how hard it is to open a jar if you don't have upper arm strength. You always need to look for ways to improve your muscle strength."

She's also learned skills that surprised her, such as coaster-making, a paper flower bouquet, and one memorable class that involved fire as part of the art, presented by GetSetUp Guide Jennifer.

"Who would have thought I'd set something on fire for a class," she said. She gave several of the results away as gifts.

Pat would like to see more nutrition classes on getting protein without meat (relevant to a blood clotting condition she manages), and a return to the class-to-class interaction she remembers from a couple of years ago, with more interaction with questions and showing finished art projects together. Still, she's noticed the platform evolving.

"GetSetUp is constantly improving the process; before, I had to request notes, now they are in my profile, and now GetSetUp has playlists. I didn't notice at first," she said.

For Pat, the real value of GetSetUp is simple: a nudge to keep growing.

"GetSetUp encourages me to try new things, like crafts and exercise," she said. "You always have to challenge yourself. This helps keep me sharp and strong so I can stay as long as possible in my own home as I age, and approaching 80 next year, I need all the help I can get."
