When the pandemic sent the world online, Selena, who lives in the Metro Detroit area, wasn't looking for a new hobby. She was looking for a way to stay connected. That's when the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) pointed her toward GetSetUp.

"I first heard about it during the pandemic when  MDHHS made an announcement, and I started joining," Selena said. "I did a lot of different things, and I'm happy to have it available."

Years later, GetSetUp has become part of her daily rhythm, and she's far from the only one. "There are quite a few of us in Michigan," she said.

A day built around classes

Selena's schedule now has a shape. Sundays start with the "Good Morning on GetSetUp" class. Evenings often include Music in the Rose Garden. And every day at 5 p.m., she's in Nadine's 31 Days of Fitness class, a program that, true to its name, wasn't supposed to last quite this long.

"I really enjoy 31 Days of Fitness. It was Nadine's idea, and she asked me to help. I didn't expect it to still be going strong over a year later," Selena said. "Having it every day is a big undertaking, and it's been really good. I know how to pay attention to my fitness in a strong positive community, and I think that's my favorite part."

Her class list doesn't stop there. She's taken Glenda's seated yoga, a run of art classes, a session on managing diabetes, tech classes, and a rotation of community sessions she's stayed loyal to. She's also joined cooking classes with Pam.

Fitting classes into a full life

Selena isn't retired. She works virtually for Sword, a global virtual physical therapy company, and coaches students in schools, which takes up a good chunk of her day. GetSetUp fits into the edges of it.

"Sometimes I just see what's available if I have some free time," she said. "Lots of times I have free slots in my schedule, and I see if GetSetUp has something I am interested in then."

She moves between devices depending on where she is: her laptop at her desk, her phone for Zoom classes when she's out and about, her iPad when she's downstairs washing dishes or cooking. None of that was second nature to her before 2020.

"I hadn't heard of Zoom," she said of the early pandemic days, describing the shift to virtual work with schools as "a big learning curve."

That learning curve paid off.

"I would say yes, I have learned a new skill. I've gotten even more comfortable with tech, having to do Zoom on my phone, going between mute and not. That's really important," she said.

It's a skill she now passes on: when other members join class from their phones and get stuck, Selena helps them find their way in.

A community that checks in

For Selena, GetSetUp's biggest draw isn't just the classes: it's the people. She credits community leader Nadine, in particular, with setting the tone.

"I have to put a plug in for Nadine. She's like the dorm leader; she calls and checks on people when they don't show up for a while," Selena said.

When members go quiet, Nadine and others, including Marybeth, follow up directly - keeping the community in connection.

"She's good about being persistent," Selena said.

That care has turned into real friendships. Selena pulled her friend Dolly into 31 Days of Fitness, and the two are now planning a meetup with other Detroit and Troy-area members.

"Absolutely, I have friends here on GetSetUp and in real life through GetSetUp," she said. She even sees fellow member Rose in person when she's in Chicago.

She's glad the door MDHHS opened for her is still wide open.

"I'm happy to have it available," she said.
