GetSetUp learners told us what they want to learn and why they come. Their answers were clear. They want to stay healthy, sharp, and independent, and most want all three at once.

Here's what they said, and what it means for the organizations that serve them.

Health is the main reason learners come to GetSetUp

Health tops the list. 67% of learners want ways to improve their health and wellness, the most-chosen goal in the survey. 63% want to stay active and steady on their feet.

Together, 79% of learners chose at least one of those two goals, and half chose both. Add money, Medicare, bills, and benefits, and 85% of learners want help with at least one health or benefits goal.

Learners don't see this as separate from why they come. 46% say managing their health or benefits is a reason they learn with GetSetUp. Among those who want to stay steady on their feet, 55% say the same.

Some learners spelled it out in their own words. They asked for Tai Chi, Qigong, "Matter of Balance" classes, and bone-building exercises. That's demand for fall-prevention programming, coming straight from learners.

9 in 10 learners come to stay sharp and curious

80% of learners say they come to keep their minds active and keep learning. It's the top reason, and by a wide margin. 67% come for fun and personal enrichment, and 90% chose at least one of the two.

Curiosity shows up in what they want to try. 62% want to try something new: hobbies, games, and creative projects. Write-ins asked for watercolor, foreign languages, genealogy, chess, art history, and classical music.

These learners aren't waiting to be served. They're choosing to grow.

Confident with technology, and still wanting more

80% of learners describe themselves as very or fairly confident with a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Yet 44% still want to use their phone or tablet more confidently.

The gap is in the middle. Nearly half (47%) of learners who call themselves "fairly confident" still want to build their tech confidence. Getting by is not the same as feeling at ease.

For the 1 in 5 (20%) learners who feel unsure about technology, the stakes are practical:

  • 81% want to use their phone or tablet more confidently.
  • 33% want help with money, Medicare, bills or benefits, compared with about 22% of more-confident learners.
  • 30% come for help with a specific task, compared with about 20% of more-confident learners.

The less confident someone feels with technology, the more likely they are to need it for the tasks that matter most: benefits, bills and health care.

At the other end, the most confident learners are already looking ahead.

Tech confidence and connection go together

84% of very confident tech users connect often with family, friends, or community. Among learners who feel unsure about technology, it's 58%.

Learners who connect less often are also looking for something specific. 32% of them come to meet people, more than double the 14% among those who connect often.

What they want is a new connection. Only 7% want to learn to stay in touch with family online, but 21% come to meet people. One learner put it simply: "Meeting people my age to talk with."

One platform, many needs

The average learner picked 3 learning goals and 3 reasons for learning. 86% picked two or more goals. 34% want health, staying active, and something new for fun, all at once.

Learners also want purpose. 21% want to find work or volunteer opportunities, and 23% come for help with a specific task or goal.

What this means for partners

  • Health plans: nearly 4 in 5 learners come looking for physical health support, and 1 in 4 want help with Medicare, bills or benefits.
  • Aging agencies: learners who are less sure about technology are the ones who most need help with benefits and specific tasks.
  • Libraries: learners are curious first. 80% come to keep their minds active, and they're asking for languages, art, history, and AI.
