Singapore is aging fast, and with that comes a rise in chronic conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and dementia. For GetSetUp Guide Yean, this isn't an abstract statistic: it's personal. That's why she's teaching her Diabetes Prevention Guide class on GetSetUp Singapore, the online learning platform built for adults 55 and older.
Yean deliberately chose to work online so she could care for her family while still working.
"I like to work online, as my family commitment requires me to shuttle between places," she explains.
Splitting her time between Singapore and Malaysia while caring for two children, one now a research assistant, the other studying biomedical science, meant flexibility wasn't a luxury; it was a necessity. She is also starting to care for an aging mother and mother-in-law, both of whom suffer from varying levels of dementia in recent years.
When her children left home, she found herself with time, energy, and a new question: what now?
"A couple of years ago, after my children left, I realized I wanted to do more," she says.
Coaching for seniors barely existed in Singapore at the time. Then, by chance, she attended a GetSetUp briefing.
"I find seniors are a niche in the market. A lot of training focuses on corporate, and not enough people focus on seniors," she says. "This is going to be one area I will focus on."
Yean's first GetSetUp class grew directly out of her own health journey. With a strong family history of diabetes, she experienced gestational diabetes, worked to overcome it, and now closely monitors her health. She brings her experience straight into her Diabetes Prevention Workshop.
"This is one of the health aspects to help people stay healthier," she says, noting she's already planning follow-up sessions such as cholesterol and lower back pain.
She's candid about not having a medical background and sees that as part of the point - sharing experiences that worked for her in practice, not medical advice.
"I'm sharing my knowledge, journey, and daily insights through personal experience," she says. "It's a bold attempt to see if people are receptive."
Her Diabetes Prevention Guide class is designed for anyone at high risk of diabetes or living with pre-diabetes, covering practical food choices and exercise strategies for Singapore's aging population. Join the session here.
Staying healthy "at this age in my late 50s," as she puts it, is her biggest passion not just for herself, but so she doesn't "become a burden to anyone in the years to come."
Her routine blends government-supported ActiveSG resistance and cardio classes in Singapore with gym sessions, weight training, and hill hikes in Malaysia, plus something delightfully simple:
"While I'm waiting for my coffee to boil, I do simple stretches."
She also swears by a 10-minute walk after dinner to blunt blood sugar spikes, and she's reworking her plate to be half vegetables, with more fiber and less heavy carbs.
Caring for both her mother and mother-in-law, who live with dementia, has also shaped what she wants to teach next.
"It's very challenging to be a caregiver to loved ones with dementia," she says.
Eventually, she hopes to bring dementia caregiving guidance to the Singapore GetSetUp community too.
For Yean, teaching online through GetSetUp isn't just work: it's purpose.
"I understand that I can help build community with people with similar interests, and I can also impart my knowledge to others," she says.
It's purpose-driven rather than "money-centric”. If you're in Singapore and want practical, real-world guidance on preventing diabetes from someone who has actually lived it, Guide Yean's class is a place to start.
