When Lori retired in January 2024, she knew one thing for sure: she wanted to focus on her health. Living in Vermont, Lori was eager to find a fitness routine that worked with her schedule - and her pajamas. That’s when she discovered GetSetUp through her local Area Agency on Aging.

“I tried to get into one of the local bone-building classes, but the spots were filled,” Lori said. “Then I found GetSetUp, and spent a lot of time browsing around. The main focus for me was exercise.”

Thanks to Vermont’s partnership with GetSetUp, older adults like Lori have access to free, live and on-demand classes designed to improve health, learning, and well-being, all from the comfort of home.

Morning Movement in Pajamas

With her newfound free time, Lori set a personal goal: to move more than she had ever been able to while working full-time.

“I’ve found a rhythm that works for me,” she said. “It’s got to be in the morning before I take a shower, and I’m in my pajamas. It doesn’t matter because I know I’m not being seen.”

At first, Lori watched recordings from the “Lounge” view. But once she realized she could join live Zoom classes with her camera off, everything changed.

“I tried Natalie in Australia, but the hour-long class was too much. Then I discovered I could leave partway through a recording, and that helped. I started doing Stacey’s classes and found her inspirational. Then I found Twyla - and now, if I see a class Twyla’s leading, that’s what I’ll take.”

Twyla’s adaptable approach to fitness has kept Lori coming back.

“She doesn’t always do the same routine, but she always offers something for pain management, hands and fingers, or hips. Even if I don’t feel like doing something, I give it a try—and sometimes I’m very pleasantly surprised to find that I was able to do it after all.  I’ve seen progress.”

A Realistic Wellness Win

Lori’s schedule now includes movement on most weekdays.

“I used to do it three times a week while working part-time. Now, I’m shooting for 4 to 5 weekdays. It’s 20 to 40 minutes a day, and maybe that’s not enough, but it’s way more than what I was doing. I take it as a win.”

She also appreciates the format: short, flexible classes without pressure.

“I don’t feel graceful. I used to do Jazzercise in my 20s, but I’ve always been hesitant to exercise. With GetSetUp, I’ve learned more about myself - that I can try things, be clumsy, and still build over time.”

Exploring New Hobbies and Learning

While fitness is her focus, Lori has also dipped her toes into GetSetUp’s art classes.

“They’re hobby-level classes, and I’m looking for something a bit more advanced. However, I browse the site frequently. I tried Tai Chi. I’m also glad to know there are Medicare classes, even though I haven’t needed them yet.”

As a retired accountant for non-profit organizations (with a background in television at WGBH in Boston), Lori values structure and clarity. GetSetUp’s platform offers both.

“I’m very grateful to the State of Vermont for enrolling in this program. I talk about it to other people. I try not to brag that I’m exercising every day, but I am, and I feel great about it. I think it’s doing positive things for me.”

Looking Ahead: Growth, Health, and Joy

Whether she’s joining live with her camera off or browsing for the next class that sparks her curiosity, Lori feels empowered by the accessibility and quality of the platform.

“I use my laptop to watch classes. It’s easy. And I think GetSetUp is amazing. I just wish I got more emails, I want to see what’s new!”

She may be retired, but Lori is still growing, still learning, and still moving with Vermont and GetSetUp by her side.
