When Colleen first heard about GetSetUp, she had her doubts.
“I thought, I work as a social worker at a hospital, I sit on the Governor’s Committee on Aging, I have 13 grandchildren and other commitments… I don’t have time to mess around on the computer and ‘do nothing.’ GetSetUp was at the bottom of my list.”
But that changed earlier this year when she became ill and had to take time off to rest and recover. At home and looking for ways to stay mentally active and engaged, Colleen gave GetSetUp a try and was instantly impressed.
“I thought this was the greatest thing I’ve seen in a long time for seniors. And really, it can be for anyone of any age. I’ve shared it with friends, family, colleagues at the hospital - even patients who were recovering at home.”
Thanks to Nebraska’s partnership with GetSetUp, Colleen and thousands of older adults across the state can access live and on-demand classes at no cost, turning recovery, aging, and caregiving into empowered experiences.
Colleen is not one to keep a good thing to herself. After seeing the benefits firsthand, she took her enthusiasm to Nebraska’s spring meeting for the State Advisory Committee on Aging.
“I told the Administrator of the State Unit on Aging that we should have training on GetSetUp for our committee so that we can pass it on to others. And we did!”
What started as a personal wellness discovery quickly turned into community advocacy.
“I’ve talked about Helen [GetSetUp’s AI assistant] to my siblings, too. I told them, Go to Helen and ask. She’ll tell you what you need. She’s so intuitive, I didn’t even need a class to use her.”
Her sister in Arizona? “She loves it,” Colleen shared proudly.
As someone interested in policy and education, Colleen has explored many features of GetSetUp, particularly those related to Helen.
“I asked Helen about yogurt and eggs, my husband swears by them for healing, and she gave me a whole list of helpful information.”
When she was diagnosed with fructose and lactose intolerances, Helen helped again.
“She gave me a great list of foods that limit fructose but don’t eliminate it, plus tips on lactose-free diets. It was awesome, and not something you expect from a digital assistant!”
Colleen also used Helen to promote ageism awareness throughout her committee work.
“We wanted to plan for October, and within a couple of days, Helen had resources, awareness days, and ideas to talk about. Ageism should be addressed every day, and I love how GetSetUp helps with that.”
GetSetUp’s flexibility has been critical for Colleen, especially during recovery.
“I haven’t taken any art classes yet, but I plan to as winter comes on. I’m supposed to be resting for 6 to 12 weeks, and I’ll be taking classes then.”
Even though she’s currently unable to do fitness with weights, Colleen has been eyeing brain games, creative sessions, and wellness programs she can join from the comfort of her couch.
“I really like the balance classes too. I thought I’d start those, but for now, I have to take it easy.”
As someone who helps care for loved ones with depression and chronic illness, GetSetUp has also helped her family.
“My daughter came to stay and help with laundry and stairs. Helen gave me a list of things to suggest for mental health: daylight, reading, and being around positive people. It helped my family.”
While some Nebraska programs are only focused on Alzheimer’s and dementia care, Colleen made a compelling case to keep GetSetUp accessible to all.
“Caregivers need time for themselves. They need to free their brain, get wellness tips, and find community. If we limit GetSetUp just to caregiving, it would be a disservice.”
That’s why she’s advocating for a caregiving arm within the platform—not a separate or exclusive tool.
“GetSetUp has something for everyone—seniors, caregivers, people recovering at home, and even committee members like me trying to spread awareness. I want GetSetUp, and I want to keep it.”
Through a fluke fall, a time of illness, and an unexpected journey into digital learning, Colleen has found something deeper with GetSetUp.
“I thought I didn’t have time. Now, I tell everyone about it. It’s changed how I think about aging and connection.”
Whether she’s using Helen for medical tips, training others to fight ageism, or planning which class to take next during her recovery, Colleen is proving that learning and advocacy have no age limit.
