On the far west side of Ann Arbor, Michigan, LaVerne begins many of her mornings with something that keeps her energized, informed, and connected: GetSetUp. Made available through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, GetSetUp has become a core part of her daily routine, helping her stay mentally and physically engaged, all from the comfort of home.
“I saw GetSetUp on the State of Michigan’s site during the pandemic,” she said. “Once I got on, it was amazing. There’s just so much available.”
LaVerne has made GetSetUp’s wellness classes a regular part of her routine, especially as she prepares for an upcoming knee surgery.
“Right now I’m taking tai chi and qigong, and I like Eileen a lot—her style is great,” she said. “I do both the live and video classes. I like the 20-minute ones because I can hone in on a couple of moves and do those regularly.”
She has also been pleasantly surprised by new offerings, such as reflexology.
“Eileen did a reflexology class, and I actually put it on the TV screen and did it. That was fun, and it felt good! I do that one regularly now.”
With a knee issue that may soon require surgery, LaVerne is planning ahead.
“I’ve peeked at the seated classes, and I’ll look more closely at those closer to the surgery. It’s great to know they’re there.”
One of the most useful aspects of GetSetUp for LaVerne has been its health education, especially when it comes to Medicare.
“The Medicare classes have been helpful to spell out the differences between Advantage and traditional Medicare,” she explained. “This time of year, my mailbox is packed and my email is packed with plans and commercials. They’re trying to sell things. But the classes help spell out the nuances. That’s been really helpful.”
She adds, “I do Medicare and Plan D and add things like prescriptions, eye, and dental. I’m not changing right now because my plan is working, but I’ll keep watching in case my health changes.”
A natural early riser, LaVerne often starts her day with a scroll through the GetSetUp calendar.
“I get up at 5 a.m. and check the app to see what classes are open. Just last week, I saw a computer class and put it on my calendar.”
She especially enjoys learning new tech skills.
“I like the computer classes, especially the ones for Android. I don’t use an iPhone, so it’s nice to learn the little things for Android that help.”
She added that GetSetUp is
“just so easy to use. You can turn your camera on or off. There’s no pressure. If I have a day with more time, I can take multiple classes. That’s the specialness of GetSetUp, it’s readily available daily and hourly.”
As someone who still holds a real estate broker’s license (though she’s not currently working), LaVerne values that GetSetUp meets her at any stage of life.
“Just the whole idea that you can go on a site and have a variety of classes you can pick based on your time that day… that’s a huge benefit.”
She’s even discovered neighbors on the platform.
“There are people I didn’t know were doing GetSetUp, and suddenly I saw them on screen. That was a shock! It really does make the idea of ‘it’s a small world’ feel more real.”
She’s also explored yoga, meditation, and cooking classes, many of which have come in handy.
“I took a class on air fryers, and I had no idea how to use mine. I was gifted one, and thanks to the class, I learned how to use it. Now I know how to cook with it, and I’m not usually someone who buys gadgets.”
LaVerne is especially grateful that the platform evolves to meet the changing needs of learners.
“I appreciate that GetSetUp is always expanding. They pay attention to what’s going on in the country and the world and offer classes that are helpful for seniors.”
Whether it’s meditation to calm the mind, tech tutorials to boost confidence, or daily wellness routines like tai chi and reflexology, LaVerne says GetSetUp has become a vital part of her life.
“GetSetUp is an amazing offering of classes, and it’s amazing.”
