In a country where millions of jobs go unfilled and businesses struggle to hire qualified workers, the solution may already be here—seasoned, skilled, and ready. Older adults are increasingly eager to return to the workforce, with over 6.5 million people aged 55 and over expected to join the labor force by 2026. Notably, workers aged 65+ are the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S. labor market.
However, enthusiasm alone isn’t enough. Many older workers face structural challenges, including ageism, lack of digital fluency, and access to relevant training. These barriers often overshadow the vast professional and interpersonal strengths that older adults bring to the table like emotional intelligence, work ethic, and leadership experience.
Age discrimination remains one of the biggest obstacles facing older job seekers. According to AARP research, 78% of older adults report seeing or experiencing age discrimination in the workplace. Misconceptions around digital competency, adaptability, and productivity continue to persist, despite evidence showing that older workers often outperform expectations in these areas.
Many want to continue working not just for income, but for purpose. Yet, opportunities often feel out of reach, especially for those navigating job transitions or unfamiliar technologies. The question becomes: How do we bridge the gap between experience and opportunity?
Enter GetSetUp, a learning platform designed specifically for older adults. With over 10 million class attendances worldwide, GetSetUp offers more than 5,000 class topics across four languages, available live, on-demand, or as short videos and interactive sessions. Topics span digital literacy, financial wellness, health and wellness, and job readiness.
At the core of this platform is a belief in the power of peer learning. Classes are taught by older adults, called “Guides,” who understand the unique learning styles, goals, and life experiences of their peers. This relatability removes barriers of intimidation, especially when learning new technologies, and fosters a supportive environment of mutual growth.
GetSetUp has joined forces with Associates for Training and Development (A4TD) to deliver job skills training to participants in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), a federally funded initiative that provides training and part-time job placements for low-income, unemployed seniors.
This partnership is more than just about teaching digital skills; it’s about empowerment. SCSEP participants access classes like “Microsoft Word Made Easy,” “How to Make Extra Income Without Leaving Your Home,” and “Successful Interviewing.” These courses are designed to build both technical ability and confidence, helping learners feel prepared and optimistic about rejoining the workforce.
The impact is measurable. According to survey data:
One SCSEP participant, Barbara from Maine, shared:
“I was taking courses in another program focused on certificates, but GetSetUp offered a refreshing break and more informative content, especially in computer classes. I have notebooks filled with information from the courses I’ve taken on GetSetUp.”
Brian, a learner from Vermont, added:
“It’s been a great way to learn, explore career options, and figure out my next step.”
For learners like Mary, Sheila, and Barbara, the platform serves not just as a place to learn, but as a launchpad for new opportunities from working in community nonprofits to pursuing remote jobs or building digital resumes.
By leveraging technology, building confidence, and creating human connection, A4TD and GetSetUp are helping thousands of older adults rewrite the story of aging and work. They’re proving that with the right support, older adults can thrive in today’s economy, and their experience is a powerful asset, not a limitation.
As Patti Gannon, Director of Programs for A4TD in NY and VT, notes:
“The value gained by our participants through GetSetUp’s live instruction provides invaluable engagement with the course material. The participants particularly appreciate being taught by peers at the same stage of life.”
This case study offers a scalable model for how community organizations, workforce programs, and digital learning platforms can collaborate to support equity in employment and aging.
