If you work in aging services, senior care, caregiving support, or public health, or you're simply trying to understand what's actually working to fight loneliness and digital exclusion among older adults. This case study is a rare thing: a multi-year, statewide program with real usage data attached to it.

Since 2022, GetSetUp has partnered with the New Jersey Division of Aging Services (DoAS) to deliver live, peer-led online classes to older adults across the state. Four years in, the results are documented in Advancing Healthy Aging in New Jersey: A Case Study of Four Years of Impact — and the numbers are the kind that make you want to see the full breakdown.

Sneak Peek: The Numbers Inside the Report

Here's a taste of what you'll find in the full case study:

  • 200,000+ older New Jerseyans reached cumulatively, across all 21 counties
  • 265,000+ total class attendances over the four-year partnership
  • 26% average gain in self-reported well-being, measured pre- and post-class
  • 16,000+ fitness, health, and wellness classes held between January 2025 and June 2026
  • 500+ attendances of custom NJSave classes, a program connecting seniors to savings and benefits

Those are the headline stats. The report goes further, breaking down which classes are most popular, which cities are driving the most engagement, and how the program maps directly to New Jersey's official State Plan on Aging.

5 Ways the Program Is Changing Aging in New Jersey

The case study organizes its impact around five core benefits. Here's a preview of each, in the words of the New Jersey learners themselves.

1. Digital Equity

Live, guided classes are closing the digital divide for older adults who might otherwise be left behind by new technology.

"I learned so much! Thinking of all the things I'm going to photograph with new eyes now. Can't wait to start." — Nancy, on Photography Basics: Intro to Composition
2. Aging in Place & Outreach

Peer instructors, often older adults themselves, make classes feel personal, not clinical, which is core to helping people stay independent and connected in their own homes and communities.

"I like working with someone older, with gray hair; it makes me feel seen. The guides are fantastic. They give you different ways to get the same results, based on your space, your health, or even if you're in a chair." — Shawn, on Chair Yoga
3. Healthy Aging

From bone density to breathing techniques, the fitness and wellness curriculum is built to meet learners exactly where their bodies are.

"All her classes are so accessible. So many modifications for wherever your body is at." — Kathleen, on Fascial Fitness and Movement Ep. 3
4. Caregivers & Elder Justice

Beyond fitness, classes on language learning, scam awareness, and elder law give both caregivers and older adults tools to protect themselves and stay engaged.

"Sam, the instructor, was very helpful and patient as he guided us through the Conversational Spanish lesson. He had us all speaking Spanish sentences and phrases by the end of the session." — Idella, on Basic Conversational Spanish Group
5. Economic Stability

Classes on AI tools, digital skills, and workforce topics are helping older adults stay financially and professionally relevant in a changing economy.

"I learned about AI and ChatGPT, too. In the beginning, it was confusing what people would do with it, and now I understand it better." — Laura, on How to Use ChatGPT

What New Jersey Learners Are Actually Signing Up For

Between January 2025 and June 2026, the most attended classes among NJ learners included:

  • Get Up with Ease: Floor Exercises for Up & Down Agility
  • Exercises to Improve Your Bone Density
  • 30-Min Feast: Heart-Healthy Fish & Greens
  • 3 Easy Breathing Strategies for Relaxation
  • Gentle Pilates for Pain Management
  • Tai Chi for Beginners
  • Gentle Chair Workout to Build Strength
  • iPad Basics
  • Energize Your Morning with Simple Stretches

Newark, Trenton, Paterson, Jersey City, and North Arlington were the top five cities for engagement, a mix of urban centers where digital access and social isolation are both pressing concerns.

Why This Matters Beyond New Jersey

What makes this case study useful isn't just that it's a feel-good story; it's a template. The GetSetUp–DoAS partnership was structured around the state's own priorities: strengthening aging in place, expanding digital access statewide, advancing health equity, and promoting economic security for older residents. If you're evaluating digital literacy, healthy aging, or caregiver support programs for your own state, agency, or organization, this case study is a concrete example of what a scaled, statewide rollout can look like and what results it can produce.
