When Mona landed in Marin County, California, she wasn’t planning to stay forever. But after her cousin introduced her to the area, and she discovered a quiet park donated by George Lucas with a Yoda fountain, something clicked.
“I sit in Imagination Park almost every day,” she shared. “It’s become part of how I heal.”
Mona is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with stage 4 H & N cancer during the COVID pandemic 2.5 years ago.
“I didn’t have a primary doctor, and I couldn’t get one. Low staff, closed clinics and all that the pandemic brought us. “I knew something was wrong.” Finally, a nurse friend, wearing her uniform, took me to an urgent care doctor who immediately called an ambulance, and I had emergency surgery for stage 4 throat cancer.
With nowhere to turn as she underwent treatment, and lockdown still in effect, she sought comfort in something she’d loved as a child: art. She was tired of thinking of cancer and talking about it and was seeking a reprieve.
“I was always creative. I started folding paper and making purses, just trying to stay busy. I gave the purses away to friends and was just making things to make sense of everything.”
That search for comfort led Mona to her local library, where she stumbled across GetSetUp.
“Once I found it, I was hooked.”
As a side effect of the cancer treatment, she lost some of her hearing, but was pleased to realize recently she could distinguish the instruments in the symphony at the park, showing a clear improvement.
Finding Healing Through Creativity
Mona discovered watercolor and journaling classes with Guide Deana, and it quickly became her weekly ritual.
“Deana’s the best. Her classes are like meditation for me. My mind doesn’t stop easily, but art gives it a place to go. She taught me the brush strokes like the ballet slipper and how to blend paints.”
Every Friday, Mona joins Deana’s Office Hours.
“I’ve met people like Caroline, who lives just one town over. Caroline is interested in the art show I am in, and we might meet in person for the first time. That’s the power of these classes.”
With encouragement from the GetSetUp community, Mona recently entered her first art piece into a fundraiser exhibition supporting local artists.
“It took a lot of angels to get me here. GetSetUp was one of them.”
Building Confidence in Wellness and Tech
Mona isn’t just learning art. She also plans to take yoga and fitness classes, and tunes into music sessions like Guide Mike’s calming concerts during the holidays.
“Christmas can be hard when you’re single. Mike’s music helped.”
She’s also gained confidence with technology thanks to Guides like Wade.
“He’s so patient. Tech can rattle me, but Wade breaks it down. He helped me learn more about AI, including Gemini. Plus, Gemini—did you know he can draw? His squirrel with a violin warmed my heart!”
A New Chapter as a Mentor
Mona’s journey has come full circle. She recently became a mentor with Imerman Angels, where she uses art to support others currently battling cancer and teach them, in part, how to fold scarves for those who lose their hair.
“This platform helped me through the hardest time of my life. Now I get to give what I learned back.”
Even as her schedule gets busier with mentoring and her other activities, art on GetSetUp continues to be a foundation of her routine.
“Art gave me a side road away from fear,” Mona said. “And I always feel better after a Deana class.”
