Fred found GetSetUp the way many people did: stuck at home shortly after lockdown began, with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
"I was searching the internet and found this great place where I could find things to do and learn new things," he said.
At the time, Fred wasn't looking for health classes specifically. He was managing type 2 diabetes, insulin-dependent, and described himself as someone who "always wants to do more research" on his own condition.
But his early GetSetUp habits leaned toward technical learning, organizing a Google inbox and setting up an Android phone.
"I was heavy into the technical end of things," he said. "Not so much about health and wellness to start."
That changed when he found the Dealing with Diabetes community sessions, where members share their everyday lives while managing diabetes. The group has been meeting regularly since the pandemic and has truly grown into a community.
Fred also liked informative sessions taught by Guide Michael out of Australia. Fred worked third shift and lived in the Eastern time zone, which meant logging into a class at 2 or 4 a.m., a schedule that worked with Michael’s time zone in Australia.
"As true today as when I was working third shift," Fred said, even after retiring. "My rhythm hasn't changed."
Fred is direct about the impact. "Definitely, health and well-being have improved thanks to GetSetUp."
He said, pointing to how the diabetes community session keeps covering new research relevant to managing his diabetes.
His goal, as he puts it, is to reach his hundredth birthday while still getting around under his own power, and staying engaged, informed, and active is part of how he intends to get there.
What started as a health class has become something bigger. After five years of meeting weekly, Fred says the Dealing with Diabetes group's focus has shifted from strictly diabetes management to simply staying connected.
"At this point, the subject matter doesn't matter whether we're getting together for coffee, to hear what's new for people, or whether Anna in Canada likes her new house," he said.
The group has drawn members from as many as six continents throughout the years it has been running, and not everyone even has diabetes.
One member, Rose, joins purely for the company. As someone in the group once put it:
"We are more fun than network TV."
That kind of social connection matters especially for a senior who no longer drives. Fred said GetSetUp's classes give him a reason to look forward to a set time each week, without needing to leave the house.
Beyond the diabetes class, Fred has kept exploring AI classes that taught him "AI" isn't one thing but a whole collective of different tools, and a shift toward Google's ecosystem, including Gemini and Sheets, after years of using Microsoft products.
He credits GetSetUp's constantly refreshed catalog for keeping things interesting.
"It's not the same curriculum all the time," he said, noting that as interests and technology shift, GetSetUp shifts with them.
Fred has also leaned on GetSetUp during more reflective chapters of his life.
During the height of the pandemic, he took virtual tours of museums and other locations through the platform, a welcome contrast to his old career, which kept him in hotel rooms roughly 300 nights a year. These days, with people traveling again, he still enjoys the virtual option on his own terms on diverse sites.
He's become enough of a regular that he sometimes steps up to help when a community session needs a volunteer. He checks in on GetSetUp every week or two to see what's new, and most Mondays, sessions end with members trading recommendations for what other sessions to try next.
Fred's wish list for the platform is simple: keep the variety coming, especially more social and game-based options, and keep bringing together people from as wide a range of places as possible. It's that mix of health management, mental engagement, and genuine friendship, he said, that sets GetSetUp apart from just watching videos alone.
