For Vicky, learning never stopped, even after decades of work as a freelance writer and a career that ranged from child welfare to IBM. But it wasn’t until she discovered GetSetUp that she found a creative outlet that would change her daily routine.
“I’ve been using GetSetUp for about three years,” she said. “My first class was quilling with Deana, and I instantly fell in love with it. When she introduced me to Kandinsky, something really clicked. I am a serious gardener and have spent over 20 years as a volunteer with Penn State Master Gardeners. Paper craft has filled the need to do something fun during the winter when the only gardening is looking at seed catalogs.”
Those classes opened the door to a new creative world.
“I have taken many other classes with Deana. She is my favorite Guide, and she’s terrific. It’s nothing like grade school art where you were expected to make an exact duplicate of what you were shown. Deana not only allows but also encourages us to take her ideas wherever we want to go with them. And she finds something positive even in work we think is awful.”
Discovering a New Creative Passion
Quilling, the art of shaping thin strips of paper into decorative designs, quickly became Vicky’s favorite activity.
“I do try watercolors, but I’m better at manipulating paper than with a paintbrush,” she explained.
Since that first class, she’s learned several paper-based crafts through GetSetUp.
“I learned quilling, paper flower folding, and book folding, all new skills. And now my succulents bloom all winter with quilled flowers I call succulent sticks. And they are great to make a store-bought plant into a special and personal gift.”
Her work has even transformed her home. Many of her favorite creations now hang where she sees them every day.
“I never had anything over my headboard before, but since I learned quilling, there’s a collection of quill pieces over my bed, and it’s beautiful. Every time I walk into my bedroom, I’m reminded of what I’ve learned with GetSetUp.”
Learning Skills That Matter in Everyday Life
While creativity is a major part of Vicky’s experience, GetSetUp has also helped her stay informed and safe online.
“I take classes with Guides Lee, Philip, and Wade,” she said. “I use Android, so I like to learn about it.”
Classes on financial literacy and scams have been especially useful.
“Philip does some things with finance. I’ve taken classes about avoiding scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it is, and don’t give information to strangers. It seems like common sense, but people can get you in all kinds of ways.”
She’s seen firsthand how convincing scam attempts can be.
“I got surveys offering free gifts from CVS and different places. Fortunately, I never filled one out. People use the names of legitimate companies to trick you.”
Even though technology can sometimes feel intimidating, the classes have helped her build her confidence.
“My smartphone still makes me feel stupid sometimes,” she admitted with a laugh. “But thanks to the classes, I have improved.”
She attends classes from her desktop computer so she can follow along easily.
“I always watch classes from my desktop. I like the big screen so I can see what Deana is doing.”
A Community That Makes Learning Interactive
When she first joined GetSetUp, Vicky mostly watched quietly.
“When I first started GetSetUp, I stayed watching classes in the browser Lounge,” she said. “Now I almost always join the Zoom, and the Office Hours are great for the interactive classes. ”
The opportunity to ask questions and connect with instructors has made the experience more meaningful. And when it comes to class materials, she especially appreciates Deana’s preparation.
“Deana’s notes are tremendous. She updates them every session.”
Staying Curious and Exploring New Ideas
Vicky also enjoys learning about emerging technologies.
“I had always been AI-averse,” she said, “but I attended a class on Perplexity, and it actually works.”
Now she sometimes uses it to keep up with world events, as she has a family member deployed in the war zone.
“When I wake up, I ask what has happened in the last 12 hours, and it gives me an update and includes the sources.”
Even after discovering so many new interests, Vicky still has ideas for future learning.
“I’d love to see more quilling classes,” she said. “And I’d like to see some serious gardening classes based in zone 6.”
But no matter what topics come next, she’s grateful for the opportunities GetSetUp has already given her.
“GetSetUp gives me a break from thinking about what’s really happening on days like this [where global news gets heavy],” she said. “And learning something new at my age; that’s a wonderful feeling.”
For Vicky, the platform has become more than just a place to take classes. It’s a creative outlet, a support system, and a reminder that growth never stops.
