When Patty from Cheyenne, Wyoming, first heard about GetSetUp, it came from a trusted source, her supervisor, Jeff Clark at the Wyoming Department of Health. As part of the team preparing for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), Jeff mentioned a timely class on GetSetUp’s platform called Recognizing the Signs of Elder Abuse.”

“The class was scheduled just two days after he told us about GetSetUp, so I signed up right away,” said Patty. “It was 20 minutes, which I loved. That was refreshing—most Zoom or Google sessions are an hour. The short format makes it easier for people to tune in.”

That brief but informative session stuck with her.

“The class was live, the instructor was very knowledgeable, and it was right on point. It was awesome.”

A New Resource for Awareness and Advocacy

Patty works with the Ombudsman Program in Wyoming, where she advocates for older adults in nursing homes, assisted living, and at-home settings, many of whom receive federal services. Her role is all about ensuring the rights of older adults are upheld and helping resolve issues that arise in their care.

“We’re getting ready for our WEAAD webinar, and I think it’s good to remind people that there are educational pieces on elder abuse out there. GetSetUp is one of them.”

The platform stood out not just for the elder abuse awareness course, but for the range of free, accessible topics that Patty sees as incredibly helpful for her work.

“There are all kinds of things—cybersecurity, chronic health, and different levels of exercise. I think GetSetUp will be very helpful, not only to recommend it to other people, but also to help our community.”

Supporting Older Adults and the People Who Serve Them

As part of her job, Patty often works with administrators who are trying to help residents better understand their rights and the services available to them. For her, GetSetUp offers a new tool in her advocacy toolkit.

“If administrators are having issues helping people understand their rights or their care options, we can refer them to GetSetUp as a resource. It’s a great educational tool, and we can say, ‘Here’s a class you can take if you want to learn more.’”

She especially appreciates the platform’s range in class length and topics, which makes it approachable for all kinds of learners.

“The class descriptions are so helpful that they list how many minutes the class will take. That really matters—some people can only stay for a short time, and now they can find what fits.”

A Resource for Professional and Personal Growth

While Patty originally explored GetSetUp as part of her job, she’s also considering it for her personal development. So far, her experience with GetSetUp has been overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s just great. The platform is easy to use, and the classes I’ve seen are really helpful. My experience so far has been really good.”

Looking Ahead: Expanding Education for Elder Rights

Patty hopes that in the future, GetSetUp might offer even more targeted content for older adults in long-term care settings, especially around resident rights in nursing homes.

“Being an ombudsman, something toward residents’ rights would be really helpful. That kind of class could be beneficial for both staff and residents.”

For now, she’s grateful to have discovered a tool that blends education, empowerment, and accessibility, all of which align with the mission of protecting and supporting older adults in Wyoming.
