Mark Flowers' transition from a narrative-driven artist to an abstract visionary mirrors a broader narrative of growth, adaptability, and the search for deeper meanings in art. His innovative use of photography in painting has revolutionized not just his artwork but also offers a fresh perspective for those looking to explore the amalgamation of different mediums.
"I've spent more than four decades teaching and making art, constantly exploring how different elements can evolve to tell a story," Mark begins, setting the tone for a journey through his creative process. This dedication to exploration and learning has defined his career, marking a significant shift in his artistic approach.
Mark's latest works, particularly the “Baltimore Series,” underscore his shift towards abstraction, using photographs as the initial layer on which he builds with paint. This technique not only bridges two artistic mediums but also layers narrative with visual depth, creating a multifaceted storytelling canvas.
"The use of cell phone imagery printed on archival paper serves as the foundation of my pieces. It's about capturing moments, however fleeting, and transforming them into something enduring," Mark explains.
This process is not merely about the physical blending of mediums but about encapsulating the transient beauty of life's moments.
Describing his most current work as a shift from ‘visual poetry’ to 'visual jazz,' Mark emphasizes the importance of spontaneity and improvisation. This analogy with jazz isn't just about the method but also reflects a philosophy of being open to the moment's inspiration, allowing the artist's instinct and experience to lead the creative process.
"The move from visual poetry to visual jazz represents a significant shift in my work. Much like an old jazz musician, I rely on instinct and the spontaneity of the moment," he shares.
This approach speaks volumes about embracing the unexpected and finding harmony in the chaos of creation.
Mark's journey is also a testament to the significance of health and lifelong learning. At 69, overcoming health challenges has only reinforced his commitment to creativity and wellness. "Discovering I had a heart defect was a turning point, but it also highlighted the need to stay physically and mentally active," he reflects. He and his wife work hard to stay active regularly and eat well.
Mark is passionate about lifelong learning.
"Learning keeps the mind fresh and open. It's the activity of learning itself that keeps you young," he asserts, highlighting the joy and revitalization that comes from embracing new knowledge and skills, especially in later life. He believes he enjoys learning even more now because he finds it more fun and gets to learn what he wants to at this stage in life.
Part of his process of learning as an artist shows how he’s been utilizing photography and images differently and integrating the modern culture of cellphone images into part of his artwork to utilize this tool as a new voice.
“I encourage people to learn about how to make things, and learning about making things is a wonderful joy, and if I can offer insights and techniques that spark them to make something, we have all won!”
