Deb has a new guest host, home cooking enthusiast David Ellis of David's Table. He'll join her every second and fourth Thursday to focus on dishes created with seasonal produce and cooking techniques and tools. 

David has always enjoyed cooking, but it wasn't until his mid-forties that things began to get serious. "I just woke up one day and realized I had never really mastered anything. I had a successful career and varied interests, but nothing I could point to and say I had mastered it."

The only thing he felt passionate enough about to really dedicate himself to was cooking.  Someone told him he should blog about it, and that's how David's Table was born. He subsequently started going to culinary school in a special night program at L'Academie de Cuisine, where he learned the classic French cooking method. It was a huge influence in making him a better cook.

"I'm interested in getting people in the kitchen because there's so much to be gained from cooking at home. A lot of people say your health correlates with how much food you make in your home kitchen."

David grows much of his own produce. He is an avid urban gardener and has a certificate in urban agriculture from the University of the District of Columbia.

He believes all good cooking comes down to three simple things:  ingredients, tools, and techniques. He strives to cook daily with fresh and local sustainable food sources, including his backyard garden. 

In his classes with Deb, he'll focus on recipes that use seasonal vegetables and explore useful tips for the home chef. 

His advice to budding chefs is, "Have fun. You're not going to be perfect, so have fun making mistakes and learning. Explore flavors. When you learn to eat good food, your palate adjusts. Be experimental. Get a cookbook from a reputable chef. And, enjoy yourself."
